It was foolish of me to hope that the NFL’s off-season domestic violence stories would stop triggering flashbacks. The 49ers tone deaf response to Reuben Foster’s DV charges remind me some wounds don’t heal.
But I will not quit on my belief that the many good people in professional football deserve better. I will not quit on my belief that NFL fans deserve better. And I will not quit on my belief that the greatest team sport ever invented deserves better.
Character matters in the game of professional football. The NFL is an 800-pound gorilla of cultural influence whose players are examples on and off the field whether anyone likes it or not. Just ask these families and their kids, who are hoping a new hero emerges at this year’s draft. I hope so too.
